Day 14 of My 25 Days of Make & Give- Making and Baking

IMG_4946.jpg

“I’ve been baking in the kitchen, all the live long day… sung to the tune of ‘I’ve been working on the railroad’ ” Yes indeed, it’s been a productive day in the kitchen and in my studio (more on that soon!) today. Making and baking. The house smells of cranberry, orange, pecans and cinnamon. Heavenly! Distribution of this baked bounty begins on Monday! And yes, those are Christmas Amaryllis (pictured) that I’m growing for gifts as well!

What are you up to this weekend?

B-Inspired!

25 Days of Make & Give-Day 17

“Making Ready”

Tonight we are awaiting the arrival of our daughter who has spent her college senior fall semester interning out LA. We haven’t seen her since August, five months and one day (but who’s counting!) and that’s waaaaaaaaay tooooooo long for this momma!!

So to help distract me while I wait, I got into some serious nesting activities. I cleaned her room, arranged her stuffed lovies on her bed, put a couple blooms on her bed stand and laid out the fluffy new booties, I bought for her!

And then there was the baking! Yup, I figured there’s no time like the present so first I made “Magic Bars”.

Then the “Honey Boys & Girls”

She should be home soon…now just let me finish decorating the Christmas Tree….!! Waiting IS the hardest part!

Spring Cleaning 2015

IMG_3190

Spring cleaning continues in the studio. I purchased this nice new, expandable organizer (Bed Bath and Beyond) for all my yummy markers and pens. As my art journaling takes place in any number of places, I have had a stash of writing and drawing implements in pouches and vessels, of all sorts, all over the house. It felt like time to get everything in one place.  Now when I am looking for just the right shade of whatever color, I know where to look! It’s really amazing what one little storage unit can do to simplify things!!

And here’s the reward for all that hard (ha ha, not really!) work: Ghirardelli Dark Chocolate Brownies with M & M’s.  Just cooked up a batch and the house smells real sweeeeeet!

Happy Spring cleaning everyone!

Day 17 Make & GIve: The Gift of Music

Today is the seventeenth day of my special holiday season of giving. From now until December 25th, I plan to make and or do something special for someone I may or may not know.I’m hoping that these little acts of kindness will inspire my readers and their friends to do the same!

We have the great fortune every holiday season of going to the “Candlelight” concert performed by the students at the high school our children attended. Both our kids participated each year: our son in the Orchestra and our daughter in  various choral groups.  Today’s show, like every year, brings tears of joy to my eyes! These students are so incredibly talented! There’s a symphonic orchestra, a wood wind ensemble, a jazz ensemble, a women’s chorus, a capella groups and chamber singers. Fifteen  pieces were sung and or played. The seting is very intimate, with the only illumination being the backlighting of the stage and the battery-powered candles that the singers carry.  The concert is continuous:  one song after another with the kids moving silently on and off stage and up and down the aisles of the auditorium. Every bit of this one hour production is perfectly coordinated.  The weeks leading up to concert, they will put on 6 shows, are filled with gruelling practices, they even record a CD!   Tired as they are, these kids rise  to the occasion and sing and play their hearts out. As I sit there, I believe that all feels definitely right with the world even if only during this brief delicious time. The concerts are free, a gift from the high school to the community. What a gift! My “Make” today was to give our choral director,  Mr. C., whom we have known for many years, a homemade bread and a tin of hot cocoa. He will need a little something to snack on during those long rehearsal sessions. I feel so blessed to have again attended this performance with my parents and our son, an alum.

I often wonder how much happier our world might be if there was more singing and music making every day?  Just a thought…

Day 15 Make & Give: Gratitude

day 15 pic 1

Today is the fifteenth day of my special holiday season of giving. From now until December 25th, I plan to make and or do something special for someone I may   or may not know.

I’m hoping that these little acts of kindness will inspire my readers and their friends to do the same!

It’s Day 15 of Make & Give! Today’s “Make” goes out to our most wonderful pediatrician and her office manager.  We have known Dr. Chaddha and Marlin for over 24 years and even though now our children go to “grown up” doctors, we will always be grateful to them.  I remember going to see Doctor as an exhausted young mom with a colicky infant and toddler in tow! Doctor first at with me and  soothed my frazzled nerves and then recommended a daily bottle of diluted chamomile tea to calm our distressed Tess.  I don’t think it cured her but it sure did comfort our baby girl (and me too as I would enjoy a cuppa later during her brief nap time). So thank you Dr C for all her expert advice/common sense and to dear Marlin for handling all the mommy distress calls with such compassion and TLC.  I hope you enjoy my annual expression of gratitude in the form of homemade bread, a tin of tea and a hug!

Day 13 Make & Give: Care Packages

Day 13 pic 2

Today is the thirtenth day of my special holiday season of giving. From now until December 25th, I plan to make and or do something special for someone I may   or may not know.

I’m hoping that these little acts of kindness will inspire my readers and their friends to do the same!

I’ve had a home based business, teaching sewing and needle arts in my studio for over 15 years.  Some of my students who started their lessons with me when they were in 3rd or 4th grade, are now college graduates, some are in college studying fashion and design. On my current roster I have sewists in high, middle and elementary school. I feel so blessed to have such a loyal following!

For my alumnae who are now living, working or studying away from home, I send out festive care packages full of treats and makes. Packages go out at every Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day Holiday. Hopefully they give the girls sweet pause and remembrance of our sewing and crafting days together! I am so proud of all of them and look forward to seeing many of them who stop by during the holidays! They are always curious to hear and to see what’s been going on in the studio and often ask for my input on a current or holiday project!

For today’s Make & Give, I am mailing out the last batch of these packages!

I thank my students, past and present, for all the fun and creative memories we’ve shared in the studio! I wish you all the best this holiday season. Stay inspired and keep sewing, crafting and making!!

Day 12 Make & Give: Grace under pressure

day 12 pic 1

Today is the twelfth day of my special holiday season of giving. From now until December 25th, I plan to make and or do something special for someone I may   or may not know.

I’m hoping that these little acts of kindness will inspire my readers and their friends to do the same!

Meet Bob, owner of the local contract postal unit in our part of town. This CPU offers all the services of a regular post office…just a smaller suite version. When you walk into this CPU there’s usually a bit of a line but no one seems to ever mind. People seem to chat freely with folks they know and those they don’t. The place excludes the a sense of community.  And that’ s probably because of the owner and his staff. People there don’t ever get that stressed out feeling of frustration one can get standing and waiting in line! All is well, they know, I will get to the counter soon and Bob and his crew will take all of my postal needs. Yesterday his postage label printer was down, not good… especially at this extra busy shipping time of year! But there was Bob, smiling, weighing packages, figuring out the cost and putting on the appropriate stamps, one at a time. The word on the line was that he apparently lost a lot of money that day having to put enough postage on …no rounding down!

So today, on hopefully my last visit there during the holidays to ship out stuff, I brought him and his staff one of my homemade holiday cakes to snack on! Way to go Bob and company!

Day 9 Make & Give: Neither Rain, nor Snow, nor Nor’easter!

day 9 pic 1

Today is the ninth day of my special holiday season of giving. From now until December 25th, I plan to make and or do something special for someone I may   or may not know.

I’m hoping that these little acts of kindness will inspire my readers and their friends to do the same!

Today in the Northeast, we are under the grips of Winter (note it’s still not winter, yet?)  Storm Damon. A classic Nor’easter that is bringing heavy winds, rain and coastal flooding. Yikes! As I sit and write this with my house all cozy with crock pot cooking away, I’m thinking about those folks out there working in these awful weather conditions.  Today’s Make & Give goes out to our US Mail Carrier. She has been on this our route, of over 310 stops, for over 14 years. I don’t know how she does it and with her own family at home! During the winter, when I’m at home, I try to catch her and hand her a cup of some hot beverage and a snack.  This time, with the knowledge of this impending storm, I had my game on!             I bought a Thermos travel mug (a paper take away cup would have probably disintegrated in today’s storm) and made her a nice cuppa whipped hot chocolate, added a homemade bread and card. I had left a note on the house mail box and hope she’d ring the bell.  And she did! Mission accomplished! She is always has a smile, whatever the weather, and I thank you, dear mail carrier.  Happy Holidays!

Be safe today!day 9 pic 3

With all the sewing, crafting and making that goes on in my daily life (not to mention all those domestic diva responsibilities!), my hands get a workout!  All you gals know what I mean.  And now that the cold weather is here, we are talking dry skin and chipped nails!  So…when I am in need of relief and repair I head on over to my “go to” local destination:  “Tiffany Nails and More”.  These ladies are simply the best.  Not only do they superbly scrub, buff and polish all my digits, but  also are so genuinely welcoming, kind and caring.  These days they often work through lunch and I thought a little snack break might be just the thing they needed.  Maggie, Lee and their staff were the recipients of my Make & Give today:  my homemade Egg Nog Cake and a fruit platter.  They immediately cut up nice big slices of cake and them topped with fruit!  Happy faces all around!           Thanks ladies for all your TLC!!

25 Days of Making and Giving!

Hello there, my artful friends! Yes, it’s true I have been in absentia for a while! No worries, just swamped! But I am happy to be back and with what I hope will be an inspiring endeavor.  It’s December 1st, 2014 and the holiday season is upon us. Recently while watching TV commercial after commercial and reading email after email about buying/ spending, which we all should do at some level to support indie makers and to keep the economy going, I thought I needed to challenge myself and hopefully inspire you as well to do a little extra creative “Making and Giving”. After all  “B-Inspired” is not only about posting my “makes” but also encouraging others to do the same!

So here goes! Starting today and for the next 25 days, I will post something I’ve made or a service I have rendered and have gifted to another. I hope you will follow me and inspire others to do so. Let’s flex our creative muscles and share with others who really need a little lift during this Season.

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for my first “Make and Give”!
